As summer has finally ended, we do highly recommend you to go for a walk at Old Danube in Vienna.
Here we would like to show you some photos that we took recently during a visit as we enjoyed the great autumn colours.
Starting from our central hotel at Praterstern, you will reach the Old Danube within 10 minutes by public transport services. After arriving there, we do recommend the following routes:
Walk 1: Upper Old Danube (Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes - 6,5km)
Watch the route by clicking into the map.
(Start: U1 Alte Donau; End: S-Bahn Handelskai)
Enter the subway line U1 at Praterstern into direction Leopoldau and exit at the station Alte Donau. When you arrived there, you have to change the waterside and walk along the northwestern end of the Old Danube. It will lead you directly to "Floridsdorfer Wasserpark" - a place full of water birds such as cormorans and grey herons. If you are lucky you can also spot beavers or a kingfisher. Afterwards you have to continue on Danube Island for 500 meters until a bridge will lead you to train station Handelskai on your righthand side. Enter S-Bahn and within 5 minutes you will be back at Praterstern again.
Walk 2: Lower Old Danube (Duration: 1 hour 10 minutes - 5,2km)
Of course there is a map for route 2 available too.
(Start: U1 Kaisermühlen VIC; End: U2 Donaustadtbrücke)
Also take subway line U1 from Praterstern in direction Leopoldau, but this time exit at Kaisermühlen. Like the provided map above shows, you have to cross the street and start your walk at Kaiserwasser, a side water of Old Danube. It is some kind of a secret spot that offers a great view at the office buildings of Kaisermühlen. Afterwards your walk will guide you to the north eastern waterside of the old danube, where many peer invite you to sit down and enjoy the view of Vienna's Skyline and the autumn colours of the trees on Gänsehäufel (an island that contains a public bath during summer). Follow the promenade and it will guide your directly to U2 station Donaustadtbrücke. Enter into direction Karlsplatz and within a couple of minutes you will return at Praterstern.
Alternatively you can also continue your tour by visiting Danube Island. Cross the bridge of "Schleusenbrücke Wehr 1" right next to Donaustadtbrücke.
