A winter trip through Vienna

Vienna is a delightful destination year-round, and the winter months are no exception. In January and February 2024, there are plenty of activities to enjoy in the city. Despite being a popular tourist spot, these months offer a unique opportunity to experience Vienna with fewer crowds. Follow me on my winter tour!

Ice skating in Vienna

There is the Vienna Ice Skating Club (WEV) at Heumarkt. Back then we always went ice skating there with the school. You can rent shoes and just drive off between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. (until 9 p.m. on Friday). You can also take part in courses. They start with “absolutely anti-talent” (like I am) and go up to pirouette training. The courses for “round dancing”, an original and quintessentially Viennese form of ice dancing, in which you move in a dance circle to waltzes, marches, polkas and modern music, are particularly popular. The association “Rundtanzen am Eis - Eistanz am Wiener Eislauf-Verein” has existed since January 6, 2017, and is committed to preserving and passing on the tradition of round dancing at the Vienna Ice Skating Association.

Viennese ice dream

At the moment the final preparations for the Vienna Ice Dream are being made in front of the Vienna City Hall. The scenery here is of course a dream. You drive in front of the town hall and all over the town hall park and enjoy the beautiful scenery while ice skating. Of course, your physical well-being is also taken care of. The Vienna Ice Dream is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. from January 19th to March 3rd, 2024. You can rent ice skates. Adults pay Euro 9 and children up to 14 years Euro 6.30.

Museums

Of course, January and February are not months in which you want to spend all your time outdoors. What could be nicer than visiting one of the many museums in Vienna. I particularly like 2 museums and will explain to you why. The first is the Haus der Musik (House of Music) in the first district. A great museum in which you can not only participate inactively but also actively. If you've never conducted an orchestra before, this is the perfect place. I am also a fan of the Art History Museum. There are incredibly beautiful exhibits in the Kunstkammer and the collection of pictures is very impressive. You could spend many days there and always discover new things. The Egyptian-Oriental collection is also fascinating. At the end, of course, a visit to the coffee house should not be missed.

Musical

New in Vienna as an in-house production of the Vereinigten Bühnen Wien: the musical “Rock me Amadeus – the Falco Musical”. It will be performed at the Ronacher and our managing director Ines Pietsch and her family have already seen it and were thrilled. Falco's well-known songs are played as well as new pieces. The musical also offers a glimpse into the life of the eccentric artist.

Toboganning and warming up

Let's be honest: we are all feeling global warming and there is less and less snow in winter. But when it snows, Vienna turns into a magical winter landscape and then the Viennese grab their toboggans and slide down every hill they find. Very close to us in the Prater you will find the toboggan hill at the Jesuitenwiese, which is very popular with young and old. For a great view over Vienna we recommend the "Roter Berg" in Hietzing for tobogganing.

Of course, the coffee houses in Vienna are ideal to warm up. Vienna's slogan used to be “Vienna is different” and that is still true. Do you know from other cities that you are discreetly thrown out after your meal and the waiter is standing next to you with the bill before you have eaten the last bite? Not like that in Vienna! Especially in the coffee house you can linger for a long time and warm up comfortably on cold winter days. You should just reorder one or two drinks, then you can stay longer.

Or how about a day stay at the Spa Therme Wien? From the hotel you can get there by subway (U1) in just 17 minutes.

As you can see: Vienna is always worth a trip and we look forward to seeing you in winter and summer and of course also in spring and autumn!
Kind regards
