The Steinhofgründe
The Steinhofgründe in the 14th district of Vienna are ideal for a trip to the countryside. From the U3 terminus in Ottakring it is a 45-minute walk to the "Feuerwache Steinhof" entrance. For those of us who are a bit more leisurely, there are also two bus lines that go directly from Ottakring. With the 46A or 46B it takes about 10 minutes to get off at the "Feuerwache Steinhof" stop. Once you have reached the fire station, you have the opportunity to explore 42 hectares of meadows and forests. There are rules here too. Dogs, for example, are unfortunately not allowed. Various camp, picnic and play areas are ideal for long breaks, to play or to let kites fly.
Church in Steinhof ("Kirche am Steinhof")
Above all these meadows and the forest sections, the art nouveau church "Zum Heiligen Leopold", better known as "Kirche am Steinhof" and often called "Limoniberg" by the Viennese, is enthroned. It is Otto Wagner's architectural masterpiece and absolutely worth seeing! Since the church is on the hospital grounds of the "Klinik Penzing", it is currently not accessible due to Corona and unfortunately also locked. When we called, we found out that a solution was being worked on and that the church could then reopen from May or June 2022. For current information please click HERE.
Eat & Drink
If you have explored enough nature and Art Nouveau and are hungry, there are some great bars and wine taverns on the way back to Ottakring. For example, you can pass "Weinbau Herrmann" on the way down, which invites you to rest and strengthen yourself in their wonderful garden. The "Weinschenke zur Blaue Nosn" is also worth a visit. Please note: most Heurigen (Taverns) only accept cash payments and you cannot pay by card. If you like it a little more upscale, stop at the foot of the Wilheminenberg at "Plachutta Grünspan" for a cold beer and a fried chicken in a basket. Or a crispy schnitzel. I would recommend this trip to anyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city for a few hours and have fun hiking and exploring!
