Family Holiday with Children in Vienna: Museum, Coffee House & Thermal Spa for a Family Day Out
A family holiday with children in Vienna can be wonderfully varied – especially when culture, little breaks and movement are combined in the right way. My name is Sabrina Hamdy, I am a mother of two children and recently became part of the Austria Classic Hotel Wien family. Since I am not only a mother, but often also an entertainer for my children, we plan a new little adventure almost every weekend.
Today, I would like to take you along on a family day out in Vienna that is especially suitable for changeable weather: with the Natural History Museum, a coffee house break at Café Landtmann and a relaxed ending at the Oberlaa Thermal Spa.
Natural History Museum Vienna with Children
Our first stop was the Natural History Museum Vienna. The building itself is already impressive – and inside, there is an incredible amount for children to discover.
My children are big dinosaur fans. The 3D dinosaur show was, of course, the absolute highlight, and it was not that easy to get them away from it again. But even afterwards, it certainly did not get boring: animals, minerals, fascinating exhibits and many child-friendly displays make the museum a wonderful excursion destination for families in Vienna.
Especially on rainy days or in bad weather, the Natural History Museum is a very good idea for a family holiday with children in Vienna. Children can marvel, learn and move freely through many different themed worlds – and adults, too, will always discover something new.
Coffee House Break at Café Landtmann
After so many impressions, you eventually need a break. From the Natural History Museum, the well-known Café Landtmann can be reached in just a few minutes on foot. Adults can enjoy classic Viennese coffee specialities such as an Einspänner. My children were especially delighted with the apple strudel. It is exactly these little breaks that often make an outing with children much more relaxed: sitting down for a moment, enjoying something sweet and then having new energy again.
For me, a visit to a coffee house is simply part of Vienna – and it can also be wonderfully planned with children.
Taking the U1 to Oberlaa Thermal Spa
After our coffee house break, we continued on to the Oberlaa Thermal Spa. From the Austria Classic Hotel Wien, getting there is very easy: you take the U1 underground line directly to the final stop, Oberlaa. The journey takes about 25 minutes and is uncomplicated, even with children.
The thermal spa is ideal for families. There is a large children’s area, slides and plenty of space for swimming, playing and relaxing. Especially after a museum visit, this is a lovely balance: first discover and learn, then splash around and move.
The Oberlaa Thermal Spa is suitable both for cold winter days and rainy summer days – making it a practical tip for a family holiday with children in Vienna.
A Sweet Ending at Konditorei Oberlaa
After swimming, we were naturally hungry again. There is a restaurant in the thermal spa with seasonal dishes – we especially enjoyed the Thermen Burger. To finish, we treated ourselves to a cake from Konditorei Oberlaa, which is located right by the entrance to the thermal spa. For my children, it was the perfect ending to a long day in Vienna.
My Conclusion: A Family Holiday in Vienna with Children
A family holiday with children in Vienna does not have to be complicated. With a good mix of culture, breaks and movement, an ordinary day can become a really lovely family outing.
The Natural History Museum, Café Landtmann and the Oberlaa Thermal Spa can be combined wonderfully. For me as a mother, this is a clear recommendation: the children have fun, discover something new and, at the end of the day, everyone is happily tired.
Warm regards,
Sabrina Hamdy
