Wine city - Vienna

Dear guests, friends, and readers!

My name is Sandro, I am the assistant to the management, sommelier and passionate wine drinker. Today, I will take you on a little wine tour through Vienna and show you my hotspots related to wine. Vienna is not only known for its architecture, art, culture, and schnitzel, but also for its unique wine tradition. Vienna is the only metropolis in the world that has its own wine-growing region within its city limits. The first records of this date back a long way: the Romans were already cultivating wine in the Middle Ages. The Viennese wine world is multifaceted and offers everything from classic, traditional wine taverns and wine bars to hip wine bars with idyllic outdoor seating areas. This blog takes you on a journey through Vienna's wine scene and introduces you to my personal favorite places.

Toasting over Vienna

Vienna is characterized by its wine taverns, where winemakers present their wines and offer small delicacies. Highlights include the wine taverns of Wieninger, Mayer am Nussberg, and the Wailand Winery. In addition to breathtaking views, fresh, drinkable wines can be combined with delicious snacks there. The journey there is like a pleasant hike on the Kahlenberg, which starts in Vienna's 19th district, in the Nußberg neighborhood. After passing through forests and vineyards, you reach the first wine tavern, the “Mayer am Nussberg,” high above. The Mayer am Pfarrplatz winery of the same name is a traditional winery and operates a restaurant. It is an important part of Vienna and its wine culture. The top wines from renowned vineyards can be enjoyed comfortably on loungers.
For an authentic Vienna experience, the “Mayer am Nussberg” is an absolute must: a sip of Vienna, a little history, and a lot of wine tavern romance.

Winery Wailand

If you walk a little further and hike almost to the top of the mountain, you will reach the Wailand Winery. From there, you can enjoy what is probably the most beautiful view of Vienna and a unique atmosphere among the vines. You are literally sitting right where the wine is made. In addition to wines, this winery also offers excellent homemade juices and incredible Brettljausen (cold cuts and cheese platters). Whether you come in a larger group, with friends, or alone, the Wailand Winery has something for everyone and welcomes all visitors. If you're not particularly motivated to walk back after your hike and enjoying a glass or two of wine, you can also take the Vienna Heurigen Express back and gain further impressions of Vienna's beautiful nature.

Wine Tavern on Nussberg - Winery Wieninger

Also on Nussberg, but one turn earlier, is Fritz Wieninger's wine tavern. For me, he is one of the best winemakers Vienna has to offer. He has shaped Viennese wine like no other. His winery is located in Stammersdorf on the other side of the Danube, but his wine tavern is on Nussberg. His vineyards stretch from Bisamberg to Nussberg. He cultivates his vineyards biodynamically with elegance and high quality standards. Fritz Wieninger, a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Vienna, invites guests to his wine tavern on Nussberg in the summer. Above the rooftops of Vienna, you can enjoy his outstanding Wiener Gemischter Satz, Rieslings, and natural wines. His wine tavern was named the best wine tavern by Falstaff in 2024 and offers quality, cuisine, and a beautiful view.

Stammersdorf and its wine taverns

On the northern edge of the city, in the 21st district, lies the charming Kellergasse, which is characterized by wine taverns and winegrowers. You can get there from Floridsdorf station by taking bus 501, which takes you directly to Kellergasse. In addition to some of the city's best wineries, the associated wine taverns also offer traditional delicacies alongside wine. After an idyllic walk through the Kellergasse up to the Bisamberg, where you can enjoy a unique view over Vienna, it is recommended to stop at one of the wine taverns and recharge your batteries.

As already mentioned, the Wieninger wine tavern is one of the most famous addresses in the city. In the wine tavern itself, you can enjoy these top wines in a classic Viennese wine tavern atmosphere: a cozy courtyard, traditional wooden rooms, and a buffet with typical delicacies such as Liptauer, bread spreads, bacon platters, and homemade pastries.
Equally noteworthy is the wine tavern at the Christ Winery. Here, 400 years of family tradition meet a modern ambience. The winery is one of the most renowned in Vienna and is also known for its Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC. The blend of rustic and stylish design creates a cozy wine tavern experience. The buffet offers classic regional specialties, from small delicacies such as spreads, salads, and cold cuts to roast pork and pastries. To enjoy the perfect summer evening, sit in the beautiful garden, sample some snacks from the buffet, and taste your way through the wines.

If you just want to enjoy the view at the top of the Bisamberg and drink a glass of wine, you can do so at some wineries that offer wine vending machines, where you can get wine around the clock.

Wein & Co

Wine & Co is the ideal meeting place for wine lovers who want to stay in the city. After a sightseeing tour, you can round off the day wonderfully with a bottle of wine and snacks at one of the five locations in the city center. In addition to Austrian wines, the extensive range of wines, champagnes, and delicacies also includes international wines. The unique concept and range offer guests a wide selection and comprehensive service. You can either order directly from the wine list or stroll through the wine shop, choose a bottle, and then enjoy it in the bar.

Rundbar

Natural wine has been on everyone's lips for some time now – in Vienna too. What appears to be a trend has actually always been part of the wine world. In Austria, too, more and more winemakers are opting for sustainable practices and the production of natural wine. What was hardly accessible until recently and was mainly offered in select restaurants is now made possible by the team at natural wine supplier Weinskandal. In 2022, the natural wine bar “Rundbar” will open in the 7th district at Lindengasse 1, a side street off Mariahilferstraße. In addition to Austrian wines, top-quality international natural wines will be served. Alongside a breathtaking wine list, a number of wines by the glass will also be offered. This will allow even the inexperienced to enjoy an uncomplicated and enjoyable introduction to the world of natural wines. In addition to wines, the bar also offers small delicacies and excellent service, provided by one of the city's best sommeliers, Stephan Martin. Whether you want to take a closer look at the wine list, enjoy a glass and tapas at the bar, or acquire new knowledge, the hip round bar in charming 1950s retro style with casual background music offers an authentic flair with Viennese charm.

Prost, Cheers and santé!

I hope I have been able to give you a small but interesting insight into the world of Viennese wine—and perhaps whet your appetite a little. Of course, there are many more winemakers and wine taverns to discover, but that would be material for another story. The main thing is that you enjoyed reading this—and maybe we'll meet at one of these places over a glass of wine.

With that in mind: Cheers, bon appétit, and santé!
