Oberlaa - the green heart of vienna
Dear guests, friends and readers!
Today I would like to introduce you to a place in my home town that is very close to my heart: Oberlaa, in Vienna's 10th district in the south of the city.
Many people immediately associate Vienna with concrete, noise and crowds, but anyone who knows Oberlaa knows that the city can also be very different. Here you will find wide fields, cosy wine taverns, the Liesingbach stream, hiking trails and, above all, peace and quiet.
I often come here with my children, whether it's to cycle, go for a walk, cool our feet in the Liesingbach in summer, climb fruit trees or secretly snack on a few cherries and apples.
For us, it's a little adventure every time! Here, you quickly become a child again. In short, nature in the middle of the city.
What many people don't know is that the Liesingbach stream flows through several districts, from Favoriten to Liesing. Although we are in the city, it often feels like you are somewhere in the countryside.
Tour through Oberlaa
Here is a brief overview of how we organise a short hiking day:
Our route always starts at the Oberlaa U1 terminus. This station may also be a familiar starting point for you. Not only can you go for walks here, but you can also visit the Vienna Thermal Spa, but today we're leaving our swimming trunks at home. We start our walk through the beautiful Oberlaa spa gardens, one of the largest and most beautiful parks in Vienna. After just a few minutes, you can feel the stress melting away. Flower gardens, a small pond full of ducks, wide meadows with sun loungers, shady trees. The perfect place for a break or a little picnic. I especially love the park in spring and autumn, when everything is in bloom or the leaves are turning colourful. (A little tip – it's also a great location for a photo shoot).
From the spa gardens, we continue to the Liesingbach, which runs like a green ribbon through the south of Vienna. The path along the stream is well developed and popular with cyclists, walkers, joggers and also ideal for prams or dogs. You pass allotments, playgrounds and quiet alleys. Everything is relaxed and peaceful! You can hear the splashing of the stream, the chirping of the birds, and sometimes even nothing at all, just silence – or my children :)
Culinary delights in Oberlaa
Of course, a leisurely stroll wouldn't be complete without a break. Snacking on fruit really makes you HUNGRY! Whether it's coffee and cake at the Oberlaa patisserie, a hearty fried chicken at the Brückenwirt, or a glass of wine at the Heuriger in Inzersdorf or Rothneusiedl, there are plenty of opportunities to take a break and get to know Vienna from its culinary side. Another insider tip is Franz-Karl-Effenberg-Park – ideal for a quiet break or a game with the children. The hike along the Liesingbach stream in Oberlaa shows how green, quiet and diverse Vienna can be. It's a trip that's well worth taking, whether for a few hours or a whole afternoon. Best of all, you don't even need a car, as the underground will take you there directly. SUPER SUSTAINABLE! So next time you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city but don't want to travel far, come to Oberlaa. Here you'll find nature, tranquillity and a little bit of the real Vienna.
(Here's a little insider tip: Oberlaa has lots of farms, and you can often just walk in without announcing yourself and visit the animals. If you meet a friendly farmer, you'll quickly be invited in for a bite to eat or given a little tour).
