Winterwonderland

Dear guests, friends and readers,

It's that special time of year again when Vienna transforms into a little Christmas wonderland. Lights sparkle everywhere, the scent of freshly baked biscuits, cinnamon and punch fills the air – and with it, the Advent spirit descends on the city. The Christmas markets have opened their doors, and it was in this atmosphere that our team set out last weekend to enjoy the first punch of the season together.

Christmas market at Rathausplatz

We chose the traditional Christmas market on Rathausplatz. As soon as we arrived, we were immediately surrounded by the lively atmosphere. The smell of roasted almonds, raclette, lángos and many other delicacies made our mouths water. No sooner had we arrived than we toasted with a warm punch. And because one punch is rarely enough, we satisfied our now stimulated stomachs with chestnuts and sweet treats.

Punch and mulled wine

We strolled leisurely through the aisles, laughing, sampling our way through the stands and heatedly discussing which punch would win the race this year. Between sparkling decorations, little surprises and many ‘Look over there!’ moments, it quickly became clear: evenings like this are the ones that stay in your memory.

a lovely pre-Christmas evening

Of course, we also shared this wonderful evening with our colleagues, who were holding down the fort at the hotel. A lively exchange about personal highlights, insider tips and favourite markets quickly developed – and in no time at all, a small, spontaneous ranking of the city's best Christmas markets was created.

Highlits and recommendations

Here are a few comments from the team:

Ingeborg Seitz (hotel manager):

‘I'm a fan of the Christmas market in the Hirschstetten flower gardens! Lovingly decorated, friendly people and no crowds – a perfect winter retreat for Viennese locals. As a tourist, however, I would recommend Schönbrunn Palace, if only for the fabulous backdrop.’

Ramira (housekeeping) & Lucas (reception):

‘Our favourite Christmas market is the one at the Old General Hospital on the university campus. Small, hidden away and with a huge culinary selection. There are great activities for children, such as an ice rink and curling. Small but nice.’

Jovan (reception):

‘The Christmas market at Spittelberg is like a fairy tale – an atmosphere that seems to come from a bygone era.’

Ines (Managing Director):

‘For me, Schönbrunn Palace and Karlsplatz are among the most beautiful. Despite the crowds, there's always enough space at Schönbrunn, and raclette bread with marzipan punch is simply a must for me. I also particularly like the market at Karlsplatz – artisanal, idyllic and with a small petting zoo every year.’
