The Praterstrasse
The Austria Classic Hotel Wien has been awarded the Austrian and European Ecolabel!
Today I'm staying close to home and writing about Praterstrasse. You will find our hotel at Praterstrasse 72. I have lived in a side street of Praterstrasse for 23 years and have therefore experienced first-hand how this street has developed.
History of Praterstrasse
Praterstrasse is approx. 1 km long and is located in the 2nd district, Leopoldstadt, and connects the Prater with the city center. Until 1862, its name was “Jägerzeile”. The U1 subway line runs under the street, connecting the 22nd district with the old town.
Interesting buildings:
From no. 11-19: the Lloyd Hof (see photos below)
In front of No. 17: you can see the Nestroy monument
At no. 54: Johann Strauss' (son) residence
At no. 70: the Dogenhof
At no. 72: our hotel, birthplace of the famous composer Max Steiner (he wrote the film music for “Gone with the Wind” and “Casablanca” in Hollywood).
The reconstruction of Praterstrasse
The renovation of Praterstrasse was completed in 2024. 50 new trees were planted, the sidewalk was renovated throughout, there are water features to cool off, lots of new seating and the highlight is Vienna's first “mega cycle highway” with a width of 4.5 meters. Cyclists can ride comfortably from the Urania to the Reichsbrücke. The reduction in car lanes has had a very positive effect on traffic. Our guests are also very pleased! Of course, the old trees have been preserved and I think that's great!
The restaurants of Praterstrasse
If, like me, you live here, you will naturally have found your favorite restaurants nearby. I would like to list all the restaurants that I have personally visited.
Gasthaus Hansy - a real Viennese corner restaurant with typical Viennese cuisine
Aida Konditorei - delicious cakes, good coffee and they also take part in “Too good to go”!
Gaia Kitchen - 100% vegan cuisine and supposedly the best vegan doner kebab in town
Restaurant ¾ Takt - affordable, classic Viennese cuisine
Cucina Itameshi (right next door) - fusion of Italian and Japanese cuisine (note: you need to book well in advance, especially for dinner)
Der Praterwirt - right in front of the church has Budweiser beer from the tank and the food is Viennese, but freshly interpreted
Edlingers Tempel - Mr. Edlinger is an artist and his food is wonderful. We had our Christmas party at the Tempel last year and everyone loved it.
Ramasuri - delicious and creative
Die Fischerei - only offers freshwater fish from local waters and prepares them creatively!
There are many more restaurants and cafés for you to discover.
The long night of Praterstrasse
This year, the “Long Night of Praterstrasse” will take place for the first time on 16 May 2025 and over 50 local businesses, associations and institutions will invite interested visitors to enjoy a varied program. There will be a guided tour of the hotel every half hour between 3 pm and 6 pm and from 3 pm to 10:30 pm you can enjoy the delicious “Scarlett O'Hara Drink” in the “Max Steiner” hotel bar at a reduced price. There will also be a competition!
My favorite place
Up there, where the Praterstrasse becomes car-free, you can have a wonderful meal in the evening and enjoy cool cocktails in the warm summer night at Cafe Ansari, for example. If the gate at “Lloyd Hof” (Praterstrasse 11-19) is open, I go inside and marvel at the former shopping arcade. The building stretches over 5 house numbers and when I leave the city and walk home, it's always a sign to me that I'll soon be home.
Have fun on the new Praterstrasse!
Yours, Ingeborg Seitz
